High standards of dress and personal appearance for all students are an important part of Les Varendes High School. We expect students to take pride in their appearance and in being a member of the school community. All items, unless indicated, are available from a number of uniform retailers including Fletcher Sports, Game Changers and Shoestring.
Uniform Allowance – The States of Guernsey operates a means-tested grant scheme to help parents with the cost of buying school uniforms. Grants are awarded on a sliding scale dependent on the parents’ residual income once certain allowances have been made. For further information visit: https://www.gov.gg/uniform.
Years 7 to 11 - Uniform |

All items of clothing should be clearly marked with the student’s name. Students must have a note of explanation from parents/carers if for any reason they are not wearing the required uniform. |

Blazer |
Black embroidered blazer with logo on the left chest pocket. Blazer to be worn at all times. |
Pullover (optional) |
Years 7 - 10: V-neck grey pullover with school logo. Year 11: Plain V-neck black pullover. Only to be worn under a school blazer. |
Tie |
Years 7 - 10: Navy with a thin white stripe and house colour stripe. Year 11: Black and white striped, provided by school. Ties to be worn at all times. |
Skirts, Trousers, Shorts and Belts |
Skirt: Black, pleated and designed to sit no more than just above the knee. Trousers: Tailored, black, standard-length trousers that sit no more than just above (or on) shoes. No denim, no chinos and no skinny jeans. Shorts: Black tailored shorts. These must be suitable school wear only and purchased from uniform retailers. Shorts must sit on (or just above) the knee. Belt: If a belt is required then it must be plain black. |
Shirts |
A white long sleeved or short sleeved shirt tucked in. No polo shirts. |
Shoes |
Must be smart, plain black, school style shoes (this does not include black trainers, boots, backless, stiletto, canvas, ballet pumps, sling-back or toeless shoes). |
Socks and Tights |
Socks must be plain white with a skirt or plain black with trousers and shorts. Tights must be black. No trainer socks or sports logos. |
Coats |
A sensible school coat which can be worn over the school blazer to and from school and outside during lunchtime. These should not be worn during lessons, between lessons or during morning break. Hoodies and jumpers are not to be worn within the building. |
Jewellery |
Students may wear one pair of plain stud earrings and a wristwatch. No other jewellery may be worn (including rings, bracelets, facial piercings, bars or belly button piercings). All facial piercings must be removed before school. |
Make-Up, Nails and Hair |
Make-up: Discrete, light make-up may be worn. Heavy eyeshadow and lipstick are not acceptable. False eyelashes or coloured (cosmetic) contact lenses are not permitted. Nails: All coloured varnish (including pale), nail extensions, gel nails are not acceptable and should not be worn. Clear varnish is permitted. Hair: Hair colour and hairstyles should not be extreme. Hair should be worn off the face and in a smart, sensible style. If you have doubts about a hairstyle/colour, please check with the school before any change takes place. Grade 2 minimum. No extreme styles. Tramlines and other razored patterns are not allowed. |
Misc. |
An apron for Food Technology is available from the school (students will be advised when this is required). |
If the above dress code is not followed then the student will be asked to remove the relevant item and it may be confiscated until the end of the school day. If a student is missing an item then a replacement will be lent to them. |
Years 7 to 11 - Physical Education Kit |

School PE Polo Shirt |
Black and blue polo shirt with school logo. |
Shorts, Skorts, Tracksuit Bottoms and Leggings |
Students must wear one of the following; School black and blue PE shorts, school black and blue PE Skort, Black leggings or black tracksuit/jogging bottoms. No gym, Nike Pro Shorts or any items with motifs/ writing are to be worn. |
Socks |
Plain white/black sports socks to be worn for indoor activities. Light blue football socks required for Football, Rugby, Hockey and other field activities. These socks must be different to those being worn in the normal school day by students to promote clean foot hygiene. |
Sports Trainers |
These can be any colour but should be different to the students' normal school shoes and suitable for sports. |
Swimming |
Swim shorts, trunks or one piece swimming costume (any colour) along with a towel. Goggles and swim caps are optional. |
Football, Rugby and Hockey equipment. |
Students should have suitable footwear for the activity (trainers for AstroTurf and football boots for the field). Shin pads, gum shield (highly recommended). Football socks should be knee length (to cover shin pads). Hockey sticks will be provided to students. |

Expectations on PE kit being worn when injured/ill or forgotten. |
Students are expected to wear their full PE kit and still attend their PE lesson and assist the teacher/their peers even if injured/ill. Students must have a note of explanation from home prior to the lesson if, for any reason, they are not able to participate practically. A spare kit will be made available for all students if they forget their PE kit. This is cleaned/washed, dried and ready for students after use. |
Years 7 to 11 - Equipment |

In order for students to maximise their learning, it is crucial that they have the correct equipment with them. We expect all students to bring the following to school each day. |

Chromebook |
Students must bring their Chromebook (fully charged) to school everyday. |
Stationery |
Students will be issued with a power pack (pencil case) at the start of the academic year. Each pack will contain two pens, two pencils, a ruler and a rubber, a whiteboard and a whiteboard marker. Students are responsible for looking after their equipment. |
School Bag |
Books and equipment should be carried in a substantial, waterproof bag. Handbags and clutch bags are not acceptable. |
Timetable |
A paper timetable will be issued to each student at the start of term. |
Scientific Calculator |
For both Maths and Science, students will be required to use a scientific calculator. The following model is highly recommended: Casio FX-85GTPLUS Scientific Calculator. Calculators can be purchased from our Maths department. |
