  • Year 9 Options

Choosing your Key Stage 4 courses is an important step in your academic journey. This booklet provides you with valuable information to help you make informed decisions about your future.

At Les Varendes High School and across all secondary schools in Guernsey, we believe in providing a broad and balanced curriculum that allows you to explore your interests and develop your talents. We encourage you to carefully consider the courses that excite you and align with your aspirations.

As students move into Key Stage 4, they will follow a curriculum made up of core GCSE subjects – English Language and Literature, Mathematics and Science (which can be studied as Double Science or Triple Science).

Around 30% of students typically choose Triple Science, but this counts as one of their four option choices. Alongside the core, students select four additional subjects, giving most pupils between 9 and 10 GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. Teaching time is balanced between core subjects and option choices, plus PE and Personal Development/Careers.

When choosing subjects, it’s important that students make informed decisions based on their strengths, interests and future aspirations. They should seek advice from teachers, tutors, older students and parents, and consider how subjects may support future pathways, whether academic or vocational.

Parents are encouraged to support students in choosing subjects they enjoy and excel in, rather than following friends or trends.

    Timelines

The options process follows a clear timeline to ensure families have plenty of opportunity to discuss and make informed choices.
